When we founded Shadowmere as the UK’s very first dedicated retirement sanctuary, we did so out of a deep sense of gratitude for the horse. We believed then—as we do now—that a horse’s twilight years should never be an afterthought. They shouldn't simply be left out in a field to fade into the background. They deserve a retirement that is as dignified, comfortable, and meticulously managed as their competitive or active years.
Shadowmere is not a corporate facility or a bustling, transient livery yard. We are a dedicated, professional family business. For us, this isn't just a career; it is our home, our life's passion, and our absolute privilege.
The Genesis of Shadowmere
The concept of Shadowmere was born from a deeply personal predicament. When our own cherished horse reached the end of his active career, we searched the country for a retirement facility that matched our uncompromising standards.
We found a glaring gap in the industry. Traditional livery yards were designed for the fit, competing horse, meaning retirees were often treated as a secondary priority. Alternatively, standard retirement options usually meant turning horses out into a vast field, exposed to the elements, to be checked just once a day.
We knew there had to be a better way. We envisioned a sanctuary that combined five-star clinical infrastructure with the absolute warmth and soul of a forever home. Finding that it didn't exist, we decided to pioneer it ourselves.
Designed for Dignity: Why We Built Shadowmere Differently
Every square inch of our facility has been intentionally designed from the ground up to address the complex physical and emotional realities of the aging horse.
Our signature architectural layout—oversized 14x14 Monarch stables, each featuring its own directly attached individual turnout pen—was engineered to solve the ultimate veteran horse dilemma: stiffness versus safety.
The Problem: Older horses suffer from arthritis and age-related stiffness; they need constant, gentle movement. However, forcing an elderly horse out into a deep, muddy winter field can be treacherous for fragile joints, whilst shutting them inside a standard closed stable causes them to painfully stiffen up overnight.
Our Solution: Our attached pens give each resident the total freedom of choice. They can step out into the fresh air to stretch their legs and socialise over the fence with their neighbours at two o'clock in the morning, or step back inside onto their deep, immaculate bedding if the British weather turns.
This design offers the freedom of the pasture with the absolute safety, warmth, and shelter of the stable. It minimises stress, eliminates herd bullying, and keeps arthritic joints moving naturally 24 hours a day.

The magic of Shadowmere lies in our complete, unified approach to our estate. As a husband-and-wife team, we live and work alongside our residents every single day, blending world-class equine husbandry with elite estate management.
Our Business, Our Passion: Run with absolute, hands-on devotion, the day-to-day care at Shadowmere is intimately managed to ensure no detail is ever missed. Every horse is known inside out—their quirks, their favourite scratching spots, their friendships, and their subtle shifts in health.
Our Land, Your Security: The equine unit sits entirely within our privately owned, multi-acre family farm. Because we own the surrounding land, we have absolute control over the quality of the forage we grow, the pristine maintenance of the fencing, and the long-term safety of the environment. Most importantly, it means absolute permanence. Your horse will never have to move again; this is their forever home.
