Frequently asked questions.
Clarity, Assurance, and Institutional Standards.
Entrusting the retirement of a cherished companion to a sanctuary thousands of miles away is a profound emotional decision. At Shadowmere, we believe that absolute operational transparency is the cornerstone of trust. Below, we address the clinical, logistical, and historical details that define our boutique sanctuary.
The Shadowmere Distinction & Heritage
What inspired the creation of Shadowmere?
The foundation of Shadowmere was inspired by our beloved thoroughbred, Irish. When his competitive career came to an early end due to injury, we faced the heartbreaking challenge of finding a facility that offered both high-level clinical management and deep, emotional comfort. Finding a glaring void in the industry, we were motivated to build a dedicated home away from home for him. Though Irish has sadly passed away, his legacy remains the beating heart of our business. Every single resident is treated exactly as he was—with the utmost reverence, compassion, and uncompromising care.
What makes Shadowmere unique compared to other retirement facilities?
We are entirely unique because we operate as a highly exclusive, boutique sanctuary with a strict maximum capacity of just eight resident horses. Unlike standard, commercial livery yards where retired horses are often a secondary priority, our entire day is engineered solely around our senior residents. This elite cap ensures an unparalleled staff-to-horse ratio, allowing us to lavish each horse with personal attention, daily pampering, and the deep peace and tranquillity they have rightfully earned.
Who stands behind the daily care at Shadowmere?
Shadowmere is run as an exclusive family business by a team holding elite professional credentials, including an established RCVS Registered Equine Veterinary Nurse with years of full-time hospital experience, an NVQ in Horse Care, and a degree in Agriculture. Critically, our clinical liaison maintains her long-standing, full-time role within a prestigious local equine veterinary hospital. This infuses our facility with an institutional level of medical expertise, exceptional diagnostic intuition for early symptom detection, and rigorous clinical governance directly inside the barn—a standard of safety that is entirely unrivalled in the UK equine retirement sector.
Clinical Care & Specialty Management
My horse suffers from age-related conditions (e.g., Arthritis, Cushing's/PPID, EMS, Laminitis, or COPD). Can you accommodate them?
Geriatric and metabolic equine care is our defining speciality. Our facilities and daily routines have been purpose-built to manage these exact complexities.
Arthritis: Handled via our orthopaedic rubber matting and our unique stable-to-pen architectural layout, ensuring constant, self-regulated movement to prevent joint stiffness.
Respiratory (COPD): Protected by our Aero-Flow ventilation system and our commitment to sourcing strictly dust-free, premium forage.
Metabolic (EMS/Laminitis): Controlled via agronomist-led grazing on low-sugar pastures, strict weight monitoring on our electronic weigh bridge, and tailored layout options like our sand-and-rubber all-weather arena.
How do you facilitate a stress-free transition for newly retired horses?
We understand that the transition from a structured competitive lifestyle or a long-term home can cause emotional anxiety for a horse. Our team is specifically trained to provide highly compassionate, patient care during the settling-in phase. By placing them in our Monarch stalls with attached individual pens, they can safely communicate and socialise over the fence with their new companions from day one, entirely eliminating the risk of herd bullying. We introduce them to natural grazing herds at a slow, intuitive pace that respects their individual temperament.
Daily Life, Communication & Visits
What is the typical daily routine for a resident at Shadowmere?
While every resident receives a completely bespoke care plan tailored to their medical history, our overarching routine is built around luxurious consistency. A typical day includes meticulous feeding regimes, turnout into our verdant post-and-rail paddocks, tactile grooming, health checks, and individual weight tracking. In the winter, residents enjoy cozy nights under our circadian red-light system. In warmer summer weather, they retain the full freedom to remain out in the fields overnight, enjoying field shelters and automatic water systems under the watchful eye of our 24/7 CCTV.
Can I visit my horse at the estate?
Yes, absolutely. The emotional bond between an owner and their horse is lifelong, and distance shouldn't diminish that connection. Our gates operate under an open philosophy, and you are warmly welcome to visit your companion at any time—the kettle will always be brewing. For our long-distance and international owners in regions like Dubai, we bridge the gap by providing secure, 24/7 access to our individual stable and paddock CCTV systems, alongside regular high-definition photo and video updates.
Financial Transparency
Are there truly no hidden fees or surprise charges?
None whatsoever. At Shadowmere, we believe that ultra-premium care should coexist with absolute financial clarity. We do not engage in the practice of billing extra for daily rug changes, fly-mask management, paddock maintenance, routine farriery, routine dental floating, or standard handling. Our all-inclusive residency fee is completely transparent, allowing you to enjoy your horse’s retirement with absolute peace of mind and zero monthly surprises.
